Broc Feeney dominates opening race in the Top End

Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney has secured victory in Race 11 of the Repco Supercars Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Making a hard, but fair move on pole winner James Golding ensured an uncontested victory.

It was intense start to the race as Golding and Feeney made equally good starts and took the opening corners side-by-side leading to a bobble for the Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro through Turns 3-4.

Golding held his nerve to lead Feeney, Winterbottom and Percat in a Chevrolet lockout.

This lasted until lap 4 when Feeney dived at the hairpin and as a consequence took the lead as Winterbottom took advantage to slot into third.

One of the bog movers after a disappointing qualifying effort was Chaz Mostert as he moved the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang up five spots to 17th.

Championship leader Will Brown was also moving forward first displacing the Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang of Anton De Pasquale, then attempted a pass on Percat to just fall short.

It got worse for De Pasquale after running wide at Turn 1 to emerge in 11th as Camaros held the top seven spots in the order.

Feeney at the front was building a significant advantage of 1.6s back to Winterbottom as he had Golding, Percat and Brown for close company.

Mostert continued to charge as he was now 14th, nine spots up from his lowly starting position.

His teammate Ryan Wood was the first to pit on lap 16 changing all four tyres as his side of the garage elected to go to an undercut, forced by a flat spot.

Golding and Percat were the first of the leaders to pit on lap 23 as both only changed the rears, while Winterbottom reacted to follow the same strategy. Brown also did likewise to leave Feeney as the leader by 7s from David Reynolds as he held a 3s difference in his pit transit time.

The big mover was Reynolds as he pitted and emerged right in the middle of the battle for second attempting to pass Golding, but jumping Percat in the process.

Feeney continued to run deep in his opening stint ahead of Waters and the Castrol Racing Mustang of Thomas Randle.

Feeney was able to pit and maintain his lead from Winterbottom just as teammate Brown began to close on second.

The race for Waters soured a little when contact with De Pasquale led to a 5s penalty after a lively battle between the Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang and Mostert.

Randle’s race also went down a disappointing route when he attempted to pass James Courtney at Turn 5, but it ended in contact and flat tyres for both leading to another trip to pit lane.

Mostert was making a late race charge to further move to sixth, a net rise of 16 positions.

Feeney comfortably won in a dominating performance from Winterbottom and Brown, while Golding held off Mostert at the flag.

Waters followed Mostert to sixth from Reynolds, Percat, Andre Heimgartner and De Pasquale.

The only non-finish didn’t start as reigning champion Brodie Kostecki’s Camaro failed to start.

Qualifying, a Top 10 Shootout and Race 12 continue the Repco Supercars Championship round in the Top End tomorrow.
