Broc Feeney will be aiming to continue Red Bull Ampol Racing’s envious run at the Sandown 500 after topping opening practice.
Conditions were perfect at Sandown as the weather has stayed away for the opening stages of the weekend.
Feeney partnered by seven-time Repco Supercars Championship winner Jamie Whincup led the way in opening practice by setting a 1m 09.304s to lead title leader Brodie Kostecki in the Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Chevrolet Camaro to be shared with David Russell by 0.007s.
Chevrolets locked out the top four positions as Nulon Racing’s Camaro for James Golding and Dylan O’Keeffe was third ahead of Macauley Jones in the TMNT Pizza Hut entry to be also driven by Jordan Boys.
Cameron Waters and James Moffat were first Ford Mustang in fifth for Monster Energy Racing, with NASCAR-bound Shane van Gisbergen partnered by Richie Stanaway 0.073s behind the benchmark as Will Brown was next in the second Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Camaro he will share in Sunday’s main event with Jack Perkins.
Rounding out the top 10 were Tim Slade/Jonathon Webb of Nulon Racing, Mark Winterbottom/Michael Caruso for DEWALT Racing and the Penrite Racing Mustang of Matt Payne and Kevin Estre.
There were no major troubles during the session as most of the primary drivers rolled out before giving the co-drivers the closing stages leading to practice start sequences.
