Cameron Waters ends Friday on top

Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters has finished the final Friday practice session fastest in a closely contested session on the Gold Coast.

Waters set a 1m 10.721s during the closing stages to edge fellow Ford Mustang driver and fastest in opening practice, Will Davison in the Shell V-Power Racing entry.

Repco Supercars Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen was third for Red Bull Ampol Racing ahead of Mobil 1 Optus Racing driver Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds in the lead Penrite Racing Ford Mustang.

Despite locking up and heading down the escape road on his final flying lap, Andre Heimgartner placed his R&J Batteries Brad Jones Racing Holden ZB Commodore in sixth.

The second Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang of Anton De Pasqaule followed from Mobil NTI Racing’s Nick Percat, Boost Mobile Racing by Erebus driver Will Brown and Mark Winterbottom continued his spell in the top 10 in the IRWIN Racing entry.

Placed further in the field, James Courtney was 11th, Brodie Kostecki 14th, Tim Slade 17th, Broc Feeney 19th and form driver James Golding in 21st after just missing the top 10 in the opening session.

There were no stoppages throughout the session although drivers continued to find confidence in the track conditions.

The Repco Supercars Championship returns to the streets of the Gold Coast tomorrow at 11:25pm AEST (12:25pm AEDT) ahead of the Top 10 Shootout and opening race.
