Title contender Cameron Waters has taken a surprise pole at Pukekohe for Race 27 of the Repco Supercars Championship.
Waters was the only driver to drop below the 62s bracket when he recorded a 1m 01.998s to snatch pole position from fellow Ford Mustang driver Will Davison in his Shell V-Power Racing Team example after he just fell 0.069s.
Leading the Holden charge was Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert in third, 0.123s off the pole time and he will line up alongside the second Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang of Anton De Pasquale.
Andre Heimgartner led the New Zealand hopes in fifth driving the R&J Batteries Commodore as Scott Pye continued his strong form to be sixth after a good event at Sandown in the Nulon Racing entry.
The fourth row is an all-Red Bull Ampol Racing Team affair with Shane van Gisbergen edging teammate Broc Feeney as behind was another surprise as Subway PremiAir Racing’s James Golding put in an impressive display to be ninth ahead of Snowy River Racing’s James Courtney.
Just missing the top 10 was Nick Percat following a better performance in the two practice sessions as Tim Slade, Jake Kostecki, David Reynolds, Macauley Jones, Thomas Randle, Jack Smith, Mark Winterbottom, Jack Le Brocq and Brodie Kostecki all being knocked out in the second phase of three-part qualifying.
Bryce Fullwood, Will Brown, Lee Holdsworth, Todd Hazelwood and Chris Pither failed to progress after the opening segment.
Race 27 for the Repco Supercars Championship will begin at 4:40 PM (2:40 PM AEST).
