Broc Feeney has finally broken through for his maiden home win at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, securing his place in the Supercars Semi Final at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 with a well deserved victory on Sunday.
The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver dominated Sunday’s 85-lap finale, leading from lights out to the chjecquered flag – crossing the line by almost seven seconds over Brodie Kostecki, while yesterday’s winner Chaz Mostert rounded out the podium.
Although there was plenty to talk about at the front of the field, all eyes were on the battle of the Finals as a dramatic final lap saw Anton De Pasquale secured the seventh and final position to eliminate Ryan Wood.
Unfortunately for the New Zealander, who was knocked out alongside Kai Allen and Jack Le Brocq, while De Pasquale joined the top three, championship leader Matt Payne, Cam Waters and Will Brown in the Supercars Semi Final.
After Saturday’s rain-soaked race, drivers enjoyed dry conditions for Sunday’s finale, and it was pole-sitter Feeney led from an all-Triple Eight front row.
While Cam Waters and Cooper Murray traded paint on the run to Turn 1, further back saw the main dramatic moment as Allen, De Pasquale and Le Brocq all tangled, with De Pasquale and Le Brocq limping to the pits with damage.
De Pasquale’s right-rear tyre subsequently let go before pit lane, scattering debris and triggering a Shannons Safety Car on lap 3. Team 18’s difficult start was compounded when David Reynolds hit the wall at Turn 13, losing two laps during repairs. Crucially, De Pasquale remained on the lead lap.
The race resumed on lap 7, with Feeney leading Will Brown, Aaron Cameron, Kostecki and Wood, who needed a strong result to avoid elimination.
Cameron soon fell away from the leading Fords, coming under pressure from Kostecki and Mostert, who had swapped positions with his teammate, Wood.
Kostecki pitted on lap 19, with Mostert following one lap later, although a wheel gun failure delayed the Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver’s stop. Cameron also lost time during his first pit stop, while Kostecki capitalised on clear air to pass Brown at Turn 12 on lap 23.
Despite his delayed stop, Mostert continued to show strong pace, closing to within half a second of Brown by lap 40. After a failed move at the final corner on lap 44, Mostert eventually dived down the inside at Turn 11 three laps later, forcing Brown wide and allowing Wood through.
Mostert then allowed Wood ahead into a provisional Semi Final position, although 35 laps remained and the Finals picture was far from settled.
Kostecki steadily reduced Feeney’s lead before their final pit stops on laps 57 and 58, with the Triple Eight driver retaining just over a second in hand over the #17 Shell V-Power Ford.
Mostert made his final stop on lap 62 and quickly closed on the leaders on fresher tyres, setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 67.
Wood came under pressure from Jarrod Hughes, receiving a significant hit to the door on lap 63, before Andre Heimgartner passed Hughes at Turn 12.
Walkinshaw TWG Racing faced a dilemma, with Wood needing one more position to secure his Semi Final berth while Mostert closed on Kostecki for second. Mostert subsequently dropped in behind his teammate, who was defending against Heimgartner.
However, the battle changed inside the final 10 laps when Hughes and Murray were forced to pit for fuel. Their stops promoted De Pasquale two positions, giving him enough points to move ahead of Wood and into the final transfer position.
At the front, Feeney continued to extend his advantage, eventually claiming victory by 6.9 seconds over Kostecki. Mostert moved back ahead of Wood on the final lap, while Heimgartner, Payne, Waters, James Golding, Cameron Hill and Thomas Randle completed the top 10.
The result secured Feeney’s place in the Semi Final, while Payne extended his championship lead having fought his way from 12th to sixth during the race.
