The SpongeBob Squarepants liveried Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 of Macauley Jones has led the opening practice session for the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint, Round 2 of the Repco Supercars Championship.
Jones set a 1m 47.616s in the final stages to take the opening session bragging rights as teams elected to have three different runs during the 30 minute session.
Many in the final run ran fresh tyres as Jones led Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne, the Monster Castrol Racing Mustang of Cam Waters, the Bendix Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 of Nick Percat and SCT Motorsports driver Jaxon Evans.
It was a great start to the weekend for Brad Jones Racing as three of its four Camaros featured inside the top 10, while Red Bull Ampol Racing tried new set-up strategies with championship leader Will Brown 15th and Broc Feeney 20th.
Erebus Motorsport’s Todd Hazelwood, Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang driver Chaz Mostert, Anton De Pasquale of Shell V-Power Racing Team, Jack Le Brocq in the second TFH Hire Camaro and R&J Batteries Racing’s Andre Heimgartner completed the top 10.
It was a largely undramatic session although DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom nearly found the wall at the fast Turn 5, just as many ran wide through Turn 1.
Track conditions were good and with the sunny conditions will get hotter as the day wears on.
Practice 2 begins at 1:25pm AEDT.
