Mark Skaife’s one shot at this legendary street circuit

Macau is one of the craziest and most dangerous circuits in the world, which has  hosted some of the best drivers in a variety of disciplines headlined by the Guia race for touring cars.

Before winning the first of his Australian Touring Car Championships, Mark Skaife headed overseas at the end of the 1991 season to contest a few international events ending at Macau.

Driving a Nissan Skyline GT-R used by Team Taisan throughout the 1991 Japanese Touring Car Championship driven by the Drift King Keiichi Tsuchiya and Kenji Takahashi for the six round title.

Skaife joined the pair for the final round at Fuji where the trio finished third, but the GT-R was Skaife’s at Macau where it featured some Australian parts.

After its domination the previous year, Macau organisers imposed a 140kg weight penalty on the GT-Rs, which was against the high pedigree of BMW and Mercedes-Benz raced in DTM.

Instead of the red and black STP/Yokohama colours the Taisan entry used during the JTCC season, it was repainted due to the support of Watsons Water, a long-time sponsor of drivers to contest the Guia Race.

Skaife qualified the GT-R in seventh behind a host of factory supported German entries led by pole sitter Emanuele Pirro in a BMW M3 Sport Evo.

The lead Nissan was Masahiro Hasemi in second, but he dropped to fourth by the race’s conclusion.

Meanwhile, ignition problems prevented Skaife from going any further following seven laps.

It proved Skaife’s only chance at the Guia circuit, which continues to be run as part of the TCR World Tour following its role as the traditional finale for the World Touring Car Championship.
