Matt Payne extends lead in Repco Sprint Cup standings

Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne has extended his lead at the top of the Repco Supercars Championship standings following a strong run at the Townsville 500.

The New Zealander finished on the podium in all three races, including a win in Saturday’s event to take an 88-point advantage to Perth.

Meanwhile, key rival Broc Feeney struggled up north as did Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Will Brown.

Feeney still remains in second, but now has a reduced margin back to Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Brodie Kostecki of 95-points. Kostecki may have missed Sunday’s action in Darwin, but made quite the impression in Townsville by scoring second, third and first.

Cam Waters has hit form at the right time of the season to sit fourth after wins in both Darwin and Townsville.

Ford dominates the top five in the standings, with it completed by the second Penrite Racing entry of Kai Allen.

Just 25-points split Allen and the lead Chevrolet driver in DEWALT Racing’s Anton De Pasquale.

Although enduring a tough time in qualifying, Brown has made ground to be clear of the fight for the Finals spots in seventh.

Both Walkinshaw TWG Racing Toyotas are next led by Ryan Wood, who leads reigning champion Chaz Mostert by 24-points.

A further 105-points back is the hotly contested final spot in Finals now held by Matt Stone Racing’s Jack Le Brocq after moving above Blanchard Racing Team driver James Golding after Townsville.

Jayden Ojeda, Thomas Randle and Andre Heimgartner have plenty of work to do if they want to make the Finals, but the Ryco Enduro Cup can throw up many surprises.

The next round of the Repco Supercars Championship is at Wanneroo Raceway for the Perth Super 440 on July 31-August 2.
