Not for the first time, Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters has traded tarmac for clay in contesting a variety of sprint car events across Victoria.
Before Christmas, Waters detoured to Warrnambool on his way home from Bathurst to run laps in his Monster Racing Ford Mustang on the clay at Premier Speedway.
Returning to the same venue a matter of days later, Waters began his summer speedway campaign in the Chief Racing #360, owned by Tickford Racing sponsor Col McQuinn.
Making the A-Main final, Waters was involved in a race ending incident.
Waters returned to the wheel at Avalon on Boxing Day where he ran strongly to qualify second for the A-Main heats as he scored third and fourth to be 12th for the final.
Another incident occurred taking out Waters and requiring the Chief Racing crew to work overnight to effect repairs before the following day’s meeting at Simpson Raceway.
Waters enjoyed his most competitive showing yet at Simpson Raceway, winning a heat on his way to finishing sixth in the A-Main final, while a return to Avalon on New Year’s Eve provided a berth in the B-Main final.
Racing on home turf last weekend in Mildura, Waters was just 0.4s behind the quickest times in the Time Trials before finishing third in both Heats to start the A-Main seventh. After dropping a position off the start, Waters finished eighth.
“Had a really good night in Mildura with the #360,” Waters said. “Third in both heats, starting third in Heat 1 and sixth in Heat 4, put us in seventh to start the A-Main.
“Bit disappointed to just miss out on the shootout, but oh well. Had a great race in the A [-Main]. I had a pretty average start with a few cars pushing in front. Worked my way back to eighth.
“Learnt a lot and a massive thanks to the team.”
Waters returns to the clay on January 15 at Simpson Raceway.
