The historic meetings at Phillip Island and Sandown are well known, so too at Morgan Park and in New South Wales, but Baskerville in Tasmania provides one of the best.
First, the race track oozes of old school featuring a lack of gravel traps, blind corners, sweeping bends and the iconic control tower as it winds through a natural amphitheatre where spectators can view most of the circuit.
Used sparingly throughout the year as one of the venues to host the Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship, it has hosted a variety of categories including the second leg of Race Tasmania, Improved Production Nationals, HQ Nationals and the Aussie Racing Cars.
Drivers such as Alan Jones, Peter Brock, John Bowe, Colin Bond, John Harvey, Allan Moffat and the like contested races here on a regular basis in the 1970s and early-1980s when contesting the Tasmania Ten Thousand Sports Sedan Race.
Baskerville also hosted the final race for the Group C era of Australian Touring Car Racing in late-1984 where Allan Grice was the winner in a Roadways Racing Holden VK Commodore.
However, the Baskerville Historics harks back to those days and even provided the debut of Group A to the circuit in 2018 as the Heritage Touring Cars held its fourth round at the legendary circuit.
Again, in 2022 these featured as part of the cast of categories taking in the event with the mighty Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R taking on the likes of BMW M3s, Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons.
Group N was well represented with Mini Coopers, Mazda RX2s, Holden Monaros, Ford Falcon GTs and Mustangs. The big celebration was for the Holden Torana GTR XU-1 as this year signified 50 years since Peter Brock scored his first Bathurst victory in the model, with a special race conducted at Baskerville.
Various sports cars including Datsuns, MGBs, Elfins, Austin Healeys and more added to the variety.
Just like at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a billy cart race for kids was held down the main straight.
Open-wheelers completed the program as a large crowd attended
Make sure to put this event into your diary for next year.
