An extension to the Queensland Raceway layout has been hinted by circuit owner Tony Quinn multiple times and it is expected to happen, with construction set to begin around Turn 2 by the end of 2026.
Informally known as ‘The Paperclip’, Queensland Raceway has been criticised for its basic layout although the quality of the racing product using the configuration continues to be solid.
Sources indicate the extension will double the amount of corners to 12n utilising a parcel of land purchased by Quinn to the west of Turn 2 and currently used as an off road park.
Quinn purchased the circuit in 2021 and almost immediately upgraded the facilities to ultimately welcome back Supercars to the venue last year after a six-year hiatus from the calendar.
Many extension concepts have been and gone without action including a bridge to spice up the divisive layout, which was originally constructed in 1999.
Quinn didn’t give much away when quizzed, but elaborated slightly on the track’s future.
“We’re actually doing a bit of a track alteration, extension, whatever you want to call it this Christmas, so you’ll have to wait for that,” Quinn said.
“It’s around Turn 2, that’s all I’ll say.”
Upgrades Quinn has made include the construction of pit garages, corporate facilities and paddock infrastructure.
Quinn also owns New Zealand circuits including Hampton Downs, Highlands Motorsport Park, Taupo International Motorsport Park and has a stake in leading Supercars team Triple Eight Race Engineering.
