Shane van Gisbergen sets record pace at Winton

Repco Supercars Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen has set a record pace in practice ahead of qualifying and Race 15 at Winton Motor Raceway this afternoon.

Boost Mobile Racing’s Will Brown led the first session earlier this morning, while van Gisbergen set a late time to lead the second as Kelly Grove Racing also staked its claim as a contender this weekend.

It was Brown leading after the opening practice session at Winton Motor Raceway for the fifth event on the Repco Supercars Championship calendar.

In an uneventful session, Brown set the pace with a 1m 18.720s to lead former Bathurst co-driver David Reynolds in his Penrite Racing Ford Mustang, however it was by just 0.111s.

Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters rounded out the top three from Team18 pair Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye, in his newly rebuilt Nulon Holden ZB Commodore.

Brown’s Erebus teammate Brodie Kostecki was sixth ahead of Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert, Brad Jones Racing duo Macauley Jones and Andre Heimgartner as Lee Holdsworth backed up his Kelly Grove Racing teammate in 10th.

The first 12 fastest entries were all from Victorian based teams, with championship leader Shane van Gisbergen the best of the Queensland squads in 13th. As for his Shell V-Power Racing Team rivals, Anton De Pasquale was 20th and Will Davison 25th.

A late lap from van Gisbergen shot him to the top in the second practice as a 1m 18.448s placed him above long-time session leader Reynolds by 0.008s, backing up Kelly Grove Racing’s improved form continued.

The Kiwi’s time was a record practice time at Winton.

Reynolds was backed up by teammate Holdsworth in fourth as reigning Bathurst winner Mostert split the pair in third, 0.085s off the championship leader’s pace.

Shell V-Power Racing’s De Pasquale completed the top five from Waters, Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney, opening session leader Brown, Pye and Davison rounded out the 10.

Tickford Racing’s James Courtney did have contact with De Pasquale on the warm up lap as the Shell V-Power Racing Mustang also ran off at Turn 1.

Qualifying for the opening race this afternoon occurs at 1:05pm AEST in a three-stage format.
