Will Brown secures pole for opening NTI Townsville 500 race

Will Brown will start from pole for the opening 250km event at the NTI Townsville 500 in his Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Chevrolet Camaro.

Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters fell to third after the Top 10 Shootout after being quickest in qualifying as Penrite Racing veteran David Reynolds moved to second just 0.050s off Brown’s 1m 13.945s benchmark.

Sharing the second row with Waters is recent NASCAR Cup race winner Shane van Gisbergen in the Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet Camaro as his teammate Broc Feeney starts right behind in sixth, split by Jack Le Brocq’s Truck Assist Racing entry.

Penrite Racing rookie Matt Payne entered the shootout second, but will start seventh alongside James Golding for Nulon Racing, as Will Davison for Shell V-Power Racing lines up alongside Chaz Mostert in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang.

Earlier, a flurry of late laps at the conclusion of the 20-minute qualifying session culminated in Waters achieving provisional pole position.

Waters set a 1m 13.320s in a last gasp effort to lead a Ford Mustang 1-2 as Payne was just 0.144s, while Brown led the Chevrolet charge a further 0.001s behind.

After topping the final practice session yesterday Le Brocq was fourth Davison making a superb turnaround to be fifth from Golding, Feeney, Reynolds and Mostert.

Rounding out the top 10 and opening the shootout was van Gisbergen, who has endured steering problems in his Chevrolet Camaro since the last round in Darwin.

Just missing the top 10 were Bryce Fullwood, Anton De Pasquale, Scott Pye, Thomas Randle and championship leader Brodie Kostecki, another to encounter a steering arm problem.

Andre Heimgartner was 16th, Todd Hazelwood 17th after being second in opening practice, while Mark Winterbottom will start in 21st.

Tim Slade was another to experience steering dramas and failed to set a representative time.

The opening 250km race is due to begin at 2:40pm.
