Will Davison may have completed a superb chase down of Craig Lowndes to take victory in the opening race of the 2013 Townsville 400, but this event is always remembered for his celebration faux pas.
Lowndes was 18s in front with 30 laps to go, but Davison and Ford Performance Racing teammate Mark Winterbottom chased down the Triple Eight Race Engineering Commodore to deliver a stunning 1-2.
Davison was pumped to score his second race victory of the season and vault into title contention, so a big burnout was on the cards after he crossed the line.
Choosing to go straight on at Turn 7, Davison proceeded to perform donuts in the escape road to the joy of the fans.
However, Davison neglected to be cautious of the gap to the concrete wall and tapped it with the rear of his Ford Falcon.
“It really did mea something special, especially to me,” said Davison.
“Equally also to the team if not more.
“We’ve been coming on strong as Frosty and Dave (Reynolds) showed in Darwin. I’ve been pretty determined for this event and we feel the passion of the Ford fans because there’s not a lot of us out here at the moment.
“I’m really proud to be part of this team and we obviously want to get wins on the board.
“We’re coming strong, so this is for the team after working incredibly hard and sponsors.
“I hit the wall doing donuts, can you believe that? It’s the clumsiest thing I’ve done.”
Only minor damage was caused and Davison finished 10th on Sunday to end the year third in the title.
